Providence, R.I. (January 22, 2025) – As it continues its work to advance health equity in the Ocean State, the Rhode Island Public Health Association (RIPHA) has named a new president, appointing Larry Warner, DrPH, MPH, to a 2-year term. Dr. Warner is the Chief Impact & Equity Officer of United Way of Rhode Island, and previously served on the RIPHA board as an officer.
He brings extensive experience with public health and policy, and strategic planning, including serving as the current chair of the Governor’s Council on Behavioral Health. As a former Providence firefighter and EMT, Warner also has hands-on experience directly helping people in need.
Established in 1996, RIPHA is a nonprofit organization committed to improving public health through the advancement of health equity, education, and policy. It brings together public health professionals in a unique, multi-disciplinary environment for study, advocacy, collaboration and idea exchange, and for activities that increase public health knowledge and health-promoting policies and behaviors. RIPHA is the local affiliate of the American Public Health Association which has championed optimal, equitable health and well-being for all for the past 150 years.
“Rhode Island may be small, but we are mighty in the work we’re doing. Initiatives like Health Equity Zones and the work of Community Health Workers are helping to pave the way toward healthier communities. I believe there is tremendous opportunity in front of us,” said Dr. Warner. “I look forward to working with our board members and community stakeholders to chart the next chapter of RIPHA’s work and the impact it has on the lives of all Rhode Islanders.”
Larry joined United Way of Rhode Island in 2019. In his executive leadership position, he leads the organization’s efforts to make the Ocean State more equitable and inclusive, and is responsible for managing millions of dollars in grantmaking and community impact strategies. In addition to his leadership of RIPHA, Larry is also an adjunct assistant professor at the Brown University School of Public Health.
